Jeff has always wanted to grow giant pumpkins. And I'm not talking about the 20 pound variety! It's the 1,000+ pound variety that he is interested in. He has read books and researched how to grow giant pumpkins, but has never actually been able to do it. The squash bugs in the garden always destroy his plans. :(
But this year Jeff actually won the battle against the squash bugs and grew two giant pumpkins. Then the first part of September we had a terrible hail storm that dropped 1-inch hail (see Dallin in picture below). It did damage his pumpkins, but fortunately they were able to survive. They didn't get as large as he had hoped, but they did both reach 60 pounds. (He'll have to try for larger next year.) Personally, I think they were a perfect size, because if they were any bigger, he wouldn't have been able to bring them to the front porch or carve them. He and the kids carved one of them to look like Edvard Munch's "The Scream."
